01 · Core summary

Core summary

Kia EV9 is a three-row battery-electric mid-size crossover SUV produced since 2023.

The Kia EV9 is a battery-electric mid-size crossover SUV with three rows of seating. Kia has produced it since 2023, positioning it as the brand's largest electric SUV and a battery-electric alternative to the Telluride. It is the second Kia model developed on the Electric Global Modular Platform, following the EV6.

The production EV9 retains much of the concept's upright, geometric design while using conventional rear doors. Depending on market and configuration, it is offered with six or seven seats, rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, and 76 kWh or 100 kWh battery options. The vehicle supports ultra-fast charging at up to 210 kW through both 400V and 800V infrastructures. The high-performance EV9 GT was released in November 2024, but it remains a version of the current generation rather than a separate generation.

02 · History & generations

History & generations

Kia first showed the EV9 Concept at the 2021 Los Angeles Auto Show. The concept established the model's three-row layout and presented an interior designed to transform into a meeting room. It also previewed the broad, upright proportions and electric-SUV role later adopted by the production vehicle.

Kia revealed the production EV9's silhouette on 3 March 2023 and officially presented the model on 14 March 2023. The production version retained the concept's overall design direction but replaced its suicide-style rear doors with conventional opening doors. It entered European markets in June 2023 and North America in October 2023, followed by launches across other regions. Local assembly began in Georgia in May 2024. The EV9 GT arrived on 22 November 2024 as a performance derivative of this first production generation.

03 · Body, platform & design

Body, platform & design

The production EV9 follows Kia's Opposites United design philosophy and uses a Digital Tiger Face front fascia. Vertical headlights and taillights reinforce its upright stance, while the body is described as using a polygonal design language. Triangular fender structures and geometric wheel arches give the sides a strongly angular appearance.

The production vehicle is visually close to the EV9 Concept, but it is not identical. Most notably, the production model uses conventional opening rear doors rather than the concept's suicide doors. The exterior design therefore combines a show-car-inspired silhouette with conventional production access. Available Digital Exterior Side View Mirrors replace conventional door mirrors with cameras and use displays mounted on the front doors, where offered. The design brief is closely connected to the EV9's three-row packaging and its role as Kia's largest electric SUV.

04 · Engine & drivetrain

Engine & drivetrain

The EV9 is powered solely by electricity. The reference extract identifies two battery options, with capacities of 76 kWh and 100 kWh.

Drivetrain availability varies by market and version. The extract identifies Standard Range rear-wheel-drive and Long Range all-wheel-drive configurations in North America and Australia, while European availability is limited to the Long Range powertrain. Other markets list combinations including Long Range rear-wheel drive and Long Range all-wheel drive. The EV9 supports up to 210 kW ultra-fast charging and is compatible with both 400V and 800V charging infrastructures. The EV9 GT, released in November 2024, is described as the high-performance version of the current EV9.

05 · Trim differences

Trim differences

Trim naming and availability differ substantially by market. In the United States, the reference lists Light, Wind, Land and GT Line, while Canada lists Land with Premium and GT Line packages. Australia offers Air, Earth and GT Line; New Zealand offers Light, Earth and GT Line. Taiwan lists Earth RWD and GT Line e-AWD.

Elsewhere, India is listed with a sole GT Line using the Long Range AWD powertrain, while Indonesia launched with GT Line Long Range and later added Earth Long Range. Malaysia lists a sole GT Line, Thailand lists Earth Long Range RWD and GT Line Long Range AWD, and Singapore lists a sole GT Line Long Range AWD. The Philippines lists Baseline RWD and GT Line AWD. These regional descriptions should not be treated as a single global trim hierarchy. The EV9 GT is a performance version released in November 2024.

06 · Interior & seating

Interior & seating

The EV9 is available with six- or seven-seat configurations. Its second-row captain-seat option can rotate 180 degrees to face the third-row occupants and 90 degrees outward toward the rear doors.

Kia introduced the Connected Car Navigation Cockpit in the EV9. Its Triple Panorama Display houses a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 5-inch HVAC touchscreen control area and a 12-inch infotainment touchscreen. Other listed equipment includes dual-colour ambient lighting, an Ergo Motion massage-seat function, a Meridian 14-speaker premium sound system, Remote Smart Parking Assist 2 and Relaxation Seat mode for first- and second-row seats.

Maximum boot volume is listed as 2,992 litres with the second- and third-row seats folded. A 90-litre front storage compartment is also identified.

07 · Efficiency & range

Efficiency & range

It estimates around 400 km for the 76 kWh battery and around 500 km for the 100 kWh battery. These figures are presented as approximate real-world estimates and should not be read as universal results for every drivetrain, market or operating condition.

The EV9 supports charging at up to 210 kW and works with both 400V and 800V infrastructures. Battery capacity, drivetrain, weather, traffic, speed, load and charging conditions can all affect usable range and energy consumption.

08 · Safety & equipment

Safety & equipment

It specifies that the award applies to vehicles built after January 2024, following headlight adjustments on the Land and GT-Line trims to reduce glare and meet the relevant requirements.

Consequently, no Euro NCAP or ANCAP rating is claimed here.

09 · Strengths

Strengths

The EV9's clearest strengths are its three-row battery-electric format and flexible seating capacity. Buyers can choose between six- and seven-seat configurations, while available second-row captain seats can rotate to support interaction with third-row occupants or access from the rear doors. That layout gives the vehicle a distinct family and passenger-use focus.

It also combines two battery choices with regional rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations. Up to 210 kW charging and compatibility with both 400V and 800V infrastructures broaden its charging-system flexibility. The cabin technology is another defining feature, with Kia's Triple Panorama Display, available relaxation and massage functions, and a listed Meridian audio system. The vehicle's geometric exterior distinguishes it from more conventionally styled electric crossovers.

10 · Considerations

Considerations

The EV9 is a large three-row SUV, so its electric range and energy use should be considered in relation to its size, passenger capacity and chosen battery and drivetrain. The supplied evidence gives only approximate real-world range estimates and no standardized consumption data, charging-time figures or motor-output specifications.

Configuration availability is market-specific. Battery sizes, drivetrain combinations, trims and seat layouts do not form one universal global lineup. Some equipment, including Digital Exterior Side View Mirrors, rotating captain seats and premium cabin functions, is described as available rather than universal. Buyers should therefore verify local specifications instead of transferring a trim or feature assumption from another country.

11 · Recommended use

Recommended use

The EV9 is suited to households or users who need three rows while moving to a battery-electric vehicle. Its six- and seven-seat configurations, available rotating second-row captain seats and substantial stated maximum boot volume make passenger and cargo flexibility central to its role. The 90-litre frunk adds a separate front storage area.

It is also relevant to drivers who value charging-system flexibility. The vehicle supports up to 210 kW ultra-fast charging and both 400V and 800V infrastructures, although actual charging performance depends on conditions and equipment. Market-specific RWD and AWD versions allow different configuration choices, while the Long Range powertrain is the sole European offering identified in the extract. The EV9 is less clearly defined here as a specialist off-road vehicle or towing vehicle because those capabilities are not documented in the supplied evidence.
