01 · Core summary

Core summary

The S650 Mustang retains rear-wheel drive and a choice of coupe or convertible bodies. EcoBoost, GT and Dark Horse serve different budgets and uses; their engines and gearbox choices are not interchangeable.

The S650 Mustang retains the two-door, rear-drive sports-car format, but its derivatives do not share one engine or gearbox. EcoBoost, GT and Dark Horse represent meaningfully different choices. The Mustang Mach-E is a separate electric vehicle and does not supply specifications for this coupe and convertible profile.

02 · History & generations

History & generations

The seventh-generation range launched for the 2024 model year. Dark Horse introduced a distinct performance derivative within it, rather than simply renaming every GT. When comparing a previous-generation Mustang, identify the generation before carrying across cabin, engine or track-package claims.

03 · Body, platform & design

Body, platform & design

Fastback and Convertible bodies answer different priorities. The roof choice should be made before treating performance packages as universal improvements. Someone seeking open-air touring is not necessarily better served by the most track-focused specification, even if its engine output is higher.

04 · Engine & drivetrain

Engine & drivetrain

The regular range separates the 2.3-litre turbocharged EcoBoost four-cylinder from the 5.0-litre V8 in GT and Dark Horse. The US launch EcoBoost uses a ten-speed automatic; manual choices belong to the V8 range. Ford’s Dark Horse description identifies a six-speed TREMEC manual, so all Mustang manuals should not be treated as identical hardware.

05 · Trim differences

Trim differences

Dark Horse includes changes intended for a more demanding performance brief; it is not a GT appearance pack. Conversely, the specialist GTD should not be represented as an ordinary option on the GT. A useful shortlist records engine, gearbox, body and chassis package as separate decisions.

06 · Interior & seating

Interior & seating

The two-door body makes access to the rear area a practical limitation even when a seat count appears acceptable. A driver choosing manual transmission should also evaluate the driving position and control relationship, not just the availability of three pedals. The Convertible’s roof mechanism adds a different ownership consideration.

07 · Efficiency & range

Efficiency & range

Fuel estimates must follow the actual engine and gearbox. A four-cylinder automatic and a V8 manual cannot share one meaningful economy claim. For a leisure car, annual mileage may be low enough that purchase condition matters more to the budget, but that is a calculation for the owner rather than an assumed saving.

08 · Safety & equipment

Safety & equipment

High output and rear-wheel drive call for tyres appropriate to the weather and intended use. A track-oriented package should not be interpreted as a promise of better behaviour in every road condition. This profile does not certify track readiness or assign a crash rating to a particular Mustang.

09 · Strengths

Strengths

The model’s appeal includes a choice between a turbocharged four-cylinder and the V8 experience, plus manual availability in the appropriate derivatives. That lets the buyer choose the experience rather than merely the highest output. The right Mustang is the version whose defining feature will actually be used.

Cariary perspective
Choose the Mustang by engine, gearbox and intended use. Dark Horse hardware matters for a different reason from a Convertible roof, and neither is an automatic upgrade for every owner.
10 · Considerations

Considerations

Separate factory equipment from aftermarket changes. A tuned EcoBoost or modified GT requires its own assessment; the original brochure no longer describes the entire car. For planned circuit use, verify the specific cooling, braking and preparation requirements instead of assuming a performance badge makes every configuration suitable.

11 · Recommended use

Recommended use

A GT manual can suit someone who specifically wants V8 involvement, while a Convertible serves an open-air touring preference. Dark Horse merits attention when its performance hardware addresses the intended use. These are different reasons to buy, not steps that every owner should eventually climb.

12 · Rivals & related

Rivals & related

A BMW M440i Coupe provides a different daily-touring approach. A used Chevrolet Camaro can be relevant where available, but its generation and discontinued status require a different search. For a buyer focused on manual sports-car involvement rather than V8 identity, smaller sports cars also deserve consideration.

13 · FAQ

FAQ

Q: Is the Mach-E this Mustang with an electric engine?
A: No. It is a separate vehicle.

Q: Is every manual gearbox the same?
A: No. Dark Horse’s TREMEC unit is a specific distinction.

Q: Is Dark Horse only a styling package?
A: No. It includes performance-focused mechanical changes.
