01 · Core summary

Core summary

The new GU SQ5 returns the focus to a petrol V6 in the European launch range. Keep it separate from the earlier diesel SQ5 and the sloping-roof Sportback.

This profile covers the GU SQ5 SUV introduced with Audi's third-generation Q5 family. It is not the previous-generation SQ5 and not the Sportback body. That distinction prevents a common shopping problem: assigning one market's diesel or transmission specification to a different car.

Cariary regards its upright roof as part of the reason to buy it. If family luggage and rear passengers matter, begin with their needs before choosing wheels or exterior trim.

02 · History & generations

History & generations

Audi announced the new Q5 family in September 2024, with European market launch planned for early 2025. The SQ5 belongs to the new PPC-based range. The separately announced Sportback follows a different rear-body design.

During a changeover, a registration date can overlap with older stock. Identify the generation from the build record rather than relying on the year in an advertisement.

03 · Body, platform & design

Body, platform & design

The GU photos show the upright SUV's roof and new lighting treatment. Two views are of a brown showroom example; the grey outdoor vehicle is separate. Reflections in showroom glass do not represent paint damage or a different body panel.

Test the size in your normal parking space. Check rear-door access beside another car and the height of the open tailgate. An SUV's useful cabin does not automatically make it convenient in every garage.

04 · Engine & drivetrain

Engine & drivetrain

The European launch SQ5 uses a 3.0-litre V6 TFSI rated at 270 kW and 550 Nm, with seven-speed S tronic and quattro. The launch specification includes MHEV plus. It is not a plug-in hybrid and should not be advertised with a plug-in commuting range.

Use the original-market specification for an imported car. Assess low-speed transmission response and engine restart behaviour during an ordinary traffic test, not only acceleration.

05 · Trim differences

Trim differences

SQ5 denotes the performance model; S line on a Q5 is not the same thing. Audi's launch description lists sports suspension for the SQ5 and an available air-suspension choice. Confirm which setup the particular car has.

For a family vehicle, the seat, suspension and wheel combination should be tested together. A visually appealing wheel package may be less suitable for damaged local roads or expensive to replace.

06 · Interior & seating

Interior & seating

Audi's new screen arrangement is a major change from the older cabin. Try your everyday tasks while stationary: pairing a phone, changing climate settings, selecting a destination and adjusting the driving position. Do not assume an optional passenger display is universal.

Bring a child seat or typical luggage if those are central to the purchase. The relevant test is the space left after people are comfortably seated, not a maximum cargo figure with the cabin folded.

07 · Efficiency & range

Efficiency & range

Mild-hybrid assistance does not eliminate fuel costs or make every journey electrically driven. Compare official figures only within the same market and test cycle. For short urban journeys, use a conservative ownership budget.

Ask for quotations for insurance, scheduled maintenance and the fitted tyre size. Those costs provide a clearer comparison with a regular Q5 than power output alone.

08 · Safety & equipment

Safety & equipment

Confirm the fitted assistance package from the vehicle specification. Demonstrate parking cameras and warnings, and check recall status by VIN. If a windscreen or bumper has been repaired, ask about calibration.

An SUV's elevated seating position can help the driver's view, but it does not remove blind spots or replace checking around the vehicle before manoeuvring.

09 · Strengths

Strengths

The SQ5's appeal is a performance drivetrain in a familiar, usable SUV shape. Its upright body is a practical reason to prefer it to the Sportback when carrying awkward items.

It is most convincing when the buyer values the engine as well as the packaging. Otherwise, a well-equipped Q5 may meet the same household requirements with a different ownership balance.

The sensible starting point for someone who wants S-model performance without sacrificing an upright cargo area. Verify market and generation before comparing used or nearly new examples.
10 · Considerations

Considerations

Do not blend GU petrol specifications with an older European diesel SQ5. Also resist treating every photograph of a new Q5 as an SQ5: the model identity should be documented.

Because this guide is not a first-hand durability test, it does not claim a proven long-term reliability record for the new generation. Warranty coverage, service support and an inspection remain useful decision points.

11 · Recommended use

Recommended use

Shortlist the SQ5 for family touring where five seats and a manageable two-row body are sufficient. If you need a third row, a larger SUV is a more honest comparison than stretching the SQ5's role.

For urban use, test parking access before committing to the performance version. For frequent long trips, give seat comfort and luggage fit a substantial part of the test drive.

12 · Rivals & related

Rivals & related

A BMW X3 M50 and a Mercedes-AMG GLC are relevant performance-SUV comparisons, but match their exact generation and drivetrain. Within Audi, compare a regular Q5 and the SQ5 Sportback.

Use the same passengers, luggage and road conditions for each test. That reveals whether the SQ5's roof shape and drivetrain suit your life better than a rival's headline specification.
