Core summary

The CLE 450’s reason to exist is its inline-six powertrain, not extra doors or extra practicality. Coupe and Cabriolet figures must remain separate.

The CLE 450 4MATIC takes the C236 coupe formula and makes its six-cylinder engine the principal attraction. It remains a four-seat, two-door car, so the upgrade over the CLE 300 buys powertrain character and performance rather than a more practical body.

Cariary's buying position is straightforward: identify why you want the six-cylinder before choosing the most expensive-looking example. A well-specified 300 and a lightly equipped 450 are not automatically ranked by their boot badges.

02 · History & generations

History & generations

The CLE Coupe arrived in 2023, bringing Mercedes' contemporary two-door offering into the C236 family. The CLE Cabriolet that followed is A236 and has its own weights and performance figures.

This page concerns the 450 4MATIC coupe. The launch European figures below provide a dated reference rather than a universal specification for every market and model year. The gallery's white fixed-roof car is visibly badged CLE 450 and 4MATIC.

03 · Body, platform & design

Body, platform & design

The roofline and long side doors communicate a touring coupe rather than a compact sports car. The photographs show the fixed roof, rear-quarter shape and the photographed car's wheel design; they do not establish that every option is standard.

When viewing one, check the front corners and wheel rims for parking damage. More importantly, make sure the driving position and door opening work where the car will actually live. Elegant proportions are not a substitute for a usable daily routine.

04 · Engine & drivetrain

Engine & drivetrain

The European launch CLE 450 has a 2,999 cc turbocharged inline-six rated at 280 kW/381 PS and 500 Nm. A 48V integrated starter-generator supplies temporary assistance, with a nine-speed automatic and 4MATIC completing the drivetrain. Mercedes listed 4.4 seconds to 100 km/h for this coupe.

Do not substitute the Cabriolet's acceleration figure or treat electrical boost as permanently additive horsepower. During a viewing, ask for maintenance and diagnostic records covering the complete powertrain, including its electrical support system.

05 · Trim differences

Trim differences

A CLE 450 wearing AMG Line equipment is not the same model as an AMG CLE. Keep engine, chassis options and cosmetic package as separate entries in your comparison.

A seller's use of 'fully loaded' is not an equipment record. Confirm seat functions, assistance packages, sound system and any chassis options individually. The best specification is the one you use, especially on a touring car where comfort matters more often than a launch-control statistic.

06 · Interior & seating

Interior & seating

The large centre display concentrates many functions into a small number of surfaces. Spend time learning the controls during the viewing rather than judging the cabin from ambient-light photographs. Check the seat's thigh support and head restraint over more than a quick sit.

Rear seating is useful but accessed through the front doors. Try the electric seat movement and make sure returning the seat leaves the driver correctly positioned. Regular adult passengers should test the roof clearance themselves.

07 · Efficiency & range

Efficiency & range

The six-cylinder 450 is a petrol mild hybrid. It cannot be evaluated as a plug-in commuter, and its electrical assistance is not an electric-only range claim.

Compare fuel and insurance costs against the 300 using the same annual mileage. If the extra engine capability is rarely relevant to your driving, the lower-powered car may leave more budget for tyres, servicing and travel—the things that keep a grand tourer enjoyable after purchase.

08 · Safety & equipment

Safety & equipment

All-wheel drive assists traction but does not eliminate the importance of tyre condition or stopping distance. Inspect all four tyres for a compatible specification and sensible wear pattern.

Check the car's actual assistance equipment and any repair-related calibration records. A powerful coupe with an impressive technology list still requires the driver to understand which functions are fitted and their limitations.

09 · Strengths

Strengths

The 450 gives a buyer a clear mechanical reason to step above the four-cylinder CLE: a six-cylinder engine in the same attractive fixed-roof format. It is a more specific proposition than simply ordering a larger wheel package.

Its best role is a personal touring car with occasional rear passengers. In that role, spending on seat comfort and useful driving aids can complement the engine rather than competing with it.

Cariary perspective
Choose the 450 when the six-cylinder engine is central to the purchase. For the same shape at a lower power level, compare a similarly equipped CLE 300 first.
10 · Considerations

Considerations

The engine does not remove the coupe's access compromises. A family needing easy daily rear-seat entry should not let the power figure obscure that problem.

Large wheels and optional equipment can also make two 450s quite different ownership propositions. Request replacement-tyre and service quotations for the actual car, and compare warranty terms instead of treating low mileage as proof that nothing expensive can need attention.

11 · Recommended use

Recommended use

Choose it for journeys where the car itself is part of the pleasure, with one or two occupants and room for their luggage. Before buying, try the route types you use most: congested streets, rough surfaces and motorway cruising can tell you more than a brief straight-line demonstration.

This assessment is based on specifications and packaging, not an invented Cariary road test. A personal test drive should decide whether the six-cylinder advantage is worth the price to you.

12 · Rivals & related

Rivals & related

The BMW M440i Coupe is a relevant six-cylinder comparison. Evaluate seating, interface and fitted chassis equipment alongside performance. A used E 450 Coupe is another route to a six-cylinder Mercedes two-door, but brings an older generation's cabin and condition considerations.

The CLE 300 remains the most useful internal comparison. The choice is not good versus bad; it is whether your budget is better spent on the 450 engine or on a lower-powered car with the options and running-cost reserve you need.
