Core summary
2018 European launch specification, V8 G 500. Source-based specification and buying analysis.
The buying question is whether you want a G-Class specifically, rather than simply an expensive SUV. Build a shortlist around access, parking and the terrain you actually encounter before treating its appearance as a practical advantage.
History & generations
The 2018 redesign retained the G-Class identity while introducing independent front suspension. This profile covers that launch-specification V8, not every later vehicle carrying a G 500 badge.
Body, platform & design
A ladder frame and rigid rear axle coexist with the new front suspension. Exposed door hinges remain a deliberate part of the exterior design.

Engine & drivetrain
The 4.0-liter biturbo V8 develops 310 kW (422 PS) and 610 Nm. A nine-speed 9G-TRONIC automatic handles transmission duties.
Trim differences
Ask which fitted options you will use: seat adjustment, cameras and wheel choice deserve separate decisions. Do not pay for a special-edition appearance on the assumption that it changes the underlying engine.
Interior & seating
The rear bench folds in a 60:40 split. Available multicontour front seats add functions including ventilation and massage.
Efficiency & range
For a used V8, request fuel receipts or a recorded consumption history from comparable trips. A seller’s best motorway journey is a poor estimate for repeated short urban drives.
Safety & equipment
During a stationary inspection, check the camera image and your direct view around each corner. Do not deliberately trigger emergency braking or test differential locks on a public-road demonstration.
Strengths
Our interpretation: the appeal is strongest when the vehicle’s distinctive construction and cabin position are things you actively want. It is a weaker purchase when the requirement is merely a prestigious badge and generous luggage space.

Considerations
Try a full entry-and-exit routine with every regular passenger. Measure your garage opening and leave working space around the doors; fitting the parked body inside is not the same as being able to use it comfortably.
Recommended use
An outdoor buyer should write down the route, surface and equipment to carry. An urban buyer should instead prioritize a parking trial. Those two exercises can lead to very different verdicts on the same example.
FAQ
Is the G 500 4x4² the same reference vehicle? No. Mercedes describes that earlier, portal-axle derivative separately; its clearance figures must not be transferred to the ordinary 2018 G 500.
What makes the Mercedes-Benz G 500 different?
