ABOUT THE BMW 8 SERIES

BMW 8 Series at a glance

BMW calls the 840i part of the 8 Series, but its real identity is closer to a luxury grand tourer than a lightweight sports car. The turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six produces around 340 hp in the specification shown here, giving the car smooth, confident performance without the expense or aggression of the V8-powered M850i. Coupe, Convertible, and four-door Gran Coupe bodies make the 840i unusually flexible as an idea. Cariary sees the Gran Coupe as the most rational version and the two-door Coupe as the more emotional one. Neither is bought for maximum cabin space. The appeal comes from the low seating position, long proportions, and the feeling of driving something more special than a 5 Series. Buyers should choose the body style before focusing on options, then confirm whether rear-wheel drive or xDrive is fitted in their market.
