3 TRIMSABOUT THE BMW M2
The F87 BMW M2 Competition is the car that turned the original M2 idea into something more serious. Produced from 2018 to 2021 rather than through 2025, it replaced the earlier single-turbo engine with BMW M’s twin-turbo S55 inline-six and delivered 405 hp in U.S. specification. A six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch transmission was available, both driving the rear wheels. Cariary’s view is that the M2 Competition sits at a rare point in modern BMW history: compact enough to feel playful, powerful enough to be genuinely fast, and still visually tied to the simple proportions enthusiasts associate with older M cars. It is not as polished or spacious as an M3, and used examples may have lived hard lives. But for a buyer who values size, rear-wheel-drive balance, and mechanical character over maximum technology, the M2 Competition can be more memorable than a larger and faster BMW.
