ABOUT THE BMW M5

BMW M5 at a glance

The 600-hp BMW M5 on this page is the F90 generation, the car that brought all-wheel-drive traction to BMW M’s executive super sedan without completely abandoning rear-wheel-drive behavior. Its twin-turbocharged V8 and eight-speed automatic deliver performance that once belonged to supercars, yet the body still looks close enough to a normal 5 Series to function as a discreet daily car. Cariary thinks that contradiction is the M5’s greatest appeal and its biggest excess. No family sedan needs this much speed, but the ability to carry passengers comfortably and then accelerate with almost absurd authority is exactly why the model exists. The selectable M xDrive system adds usability, although weight, running costs, and complexity remain significant. This profile refers to the 2018–2023 F90, not the newer plug-in-hybrid G90 M5. Buyers must separate those generations because their engineering philosophies are fundamentally different.
