ABOUT THE MERCEDES-AMG GT53

Mercedes-AMG GT53 at a glance

The Mercedes-AMG GT 53 4MATIC+ 4-Door Coupe gives the X290 range a stronger version of AMG’s electrified 3.0-liter inline-six. With around 435 hp in common global specifications, a nine-speed transmission and variable all-wheel drive, it offers serious acceleration without moving to the heavier-cost V8 ownership experience of the GT 63. Cariary sees the GT 53 as the sweet spot for drivers who want the four-door GT’s shape and cabin but will actually use it as a daily grand tourer. It is smoother and more restrained than the V8 models, yet noticeably more convincing than the lower-output GT 43. Rear headroom and visibility are not as generous as in an E-Class, and the wide body can be cumbersome in tight spaces. Buyers should view those compromises as the price of the design, then compare option levels carefully because equipment has a major effect on both comfort and resale value.
