ABOUT THE MERCEDES-AMG S63

Mercedes-AMG S63 at a glance

The facelifted W222 Mercedes-AMG S 63 4MATIC+ combines S-Class isolation with a hand-built 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 producing about 612 PS, or 603 hp in U.S. specification. A nine-speed transmission and variable all-wheel drive give the large sedan extraordinary acceleration without removing its long-distance comfort. Cariary sees this generation as a particularly complete performance limousine: it still feels like an S-Class first, but the engine, brakes and chassis provide real AMG authority when requested. The newer W223 S 63 E Performance uses a plug-in-hybrid system and should not be confused with this lighter, purely V8-led model. Used buyers should inspect air suspension, advanced driver-assistance equipment, rear-seat features and service history in detail. Depreciation can make the purchase price tempting, but maintenance remains tied to a highly complex flagship—not an ordinary used luxury sedan.
