Core summary

Volkswagen Tiguan

The 2026 Volkswagen Tiguan is the current North American version of Volkswagen’s third-generation compact SUV. It uses a front-mounted 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, an eight-speed automatic transmission and either front-wheel drive or Volkswagen’s 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system. The North American vehicle is offered only with two rows and five seats. Model-year 2026 brings a new SEL R-Line Turbo grade with a stronger version of the engine, producing 268 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Other U.S. trims use a 201-hp version producing 207 pound-feet with front-wheel drive or 221 pound-feet with 4MOTION. The lineup combines a digital instrument cluster, large central displays, IQ.DRIVE driver assistance and a practical cargo area. Global third-generation Tiguans use a broader engine portfolio, including TDI, eTSI and plug-in hybrid systems, but those powertrains are not part of the 2026 U.S. range.

02 · History & generations

History & generations

Volkswagen presented the Tiguan concept at the 2006 Los Angeles Auto Show and introduced the first production generation in 2007. The name combines “Tiger” with the German word “Leguan,” meaning iguana. The second generation arrived in 2016 on Volkswagen’s Modular Transverse Matrix platform and brought a larger body, more cabin space and expanded driver-assistance technology. A long-wheelbase Tiguan Allspace followed in 2017, adding up to seven seats in selected markets. The performance-focused Tiguan R appeared in 2020 with 320 PS and all-wheel drive. Volkswagen introduced the third generation in 2024. It moved to the MQB evo architecture and adopted a new cockpit, larger displays, revised suspension technology and a range of gasoline, diesel, mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid systems globally. The U.S. received the third generation for model year 2025 as a two-row vehicle, followed by the 2026 lineup described here.

03 · Body, platform & design

Body, platform & design

The third-generation Tiguan adopts a smoother, more aerodynamic body with a taller front end, flared fenders and shorter visual overhangs. Volkswagen gives the front fascia slim LED headlights, an Adaptive Front-lighting System and Light Assist high-beam control. The rear uses connected LED taillamps. R-Line versions add sport-oriented bumper details and distinctive wheel designs. The SE R-Line Black trim uses black exterior accents, including black badging, mirror caps, roof rails and spoiler treatment. The SEL R-Line Turbo adds an illuminated front light bar, backlit Volkswagen logos and additional exterior lighting details. The 2026 North American Tiguan measures 184.4 inches long, 73.0 inches wide and 109.9 inches between the axles. Front-wheel-drive models are 66.1 inches tall; 4MOTION models are 66.5 inches tall. Wheel sizes range from 17 inches on the entry grade to 20 inches on the R-Line grades.

04 · Engine & drivetrain

Engine & drivetrain

The 2026 U.S. Tiguan uses Volkswagen’s EA888 evo5 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. S, SE and SE R-Line Black models produce 201 horsepower. Torque is 207 pound-feet with front-wheel drive and 221 pound-feet with 4MOTION. The new SEL R-Line Turbo uses a higher-output version producing 268 horsepower and 258 pound-feet, with 4MOTION standard. Every North American Tiguan uses an eight-speed automatic transmission and automatic start-stop. Volkswagen revised the engine with a variable-geometry turbocharger, higher-pressure fuel injection, revised charge cooling and updated camshaft technology. The stronger engine uses a larger turbocharger, lower compression ratio, reinforced internal components and piston oil cooling. Driving Mode Selection is standard, with Normal, Sport, Eco and Individual settings. Front-wheel-drive versions can tow up to 1,500 pounds, while 4MOTION models are rated for up to 1,800 pounds in the U.S. lineup.

05 · Trim differences

Trim differences

The 2026 U.S. lineup consists of S, SE, SE R-Line Black and SEL R-Line Turbo. The S is the entry grade and offers front-wheel drive as standard, with 4MOTION available. The SE adds equipment such as remote start, a power tailgate, a power-adjustable driver seat and upgraded interior materials. The SE R-Line Black adds R-Line styling, black exterior details, larger wheels and additional cabin equipment. The SEL R-Line Turbo is the range-topping model and pairs the 268-hp engine with standard 4MOTION. It also includes premium seating, a 15-inch infotainment display, ventilated and massage-equipped front seats, heated rear outboard seats and additional lighting equipment. Volkswagen’s global Tiguan range uses different trim names and powertrains. European versions include Life, Elegance, R-Line and special editions such as Edition 20, but those names do not define the U.S. 2026 lineup.

06 · Interior & seating

Interior & seating

The North American Tiguan uses a two-row cabin with 103.8 cubic feet of passenger volume. Volkswagen fits every 2026 model with a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro instrument display and a 12.9-inch center infotainment screen. The SEL R-Line Turbo upgrades the central display to 15 inches. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, voice control, SiriusXM with 360L and four USB-C ports are included across the range. SE models and higher receive leatherette seating surfaces with CloudTex accents, while the SEL R-Line Turbo uses perforated Varenna leather upholstery with quilted diamond stitching. Higher grades add ambient lighting, heated rear seats, ventilated front seats and a ten-chamber pneumatic massage function. The center console stores up to 7.6 liters and uses a column-mounted gear selector. Cargo volume is 33.8 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 69.8 cubic feet with the 60:40-split rear seats folded.

07 · Efficiency & range

Efficiency & range

EPA-estimated fuel economy varies by engine output, trim and drivetrain. The 2026 Tiguan S with front-wheel drive is rated at 26 mpg city, 34 mpg highway and 29 mpg combined. SE and SE R-Line Black front-wheel-drive models are rated at 25 mpg city, 32 mpg highway and 28 mpg combined. S, SE and SE R-Line Black models with 4MOTION are rated at 22 mpg city, 30 mpg highway and 25 mpg combined. The SEL R-Line Turbo with standard 4MOTION is rated at 22 mpg city, 29 mpg highway and 25 mpg combined. All U.S. models use regular gasoline and automatic start-stop. Global third-generation Tiguans offer additional efficiency-focused powertrains, including 48-volt eTSI mild-hybrid systems and plug-in hybrid eHybrid models. Those global ratings use regional testing procedures and should not be compared directly with U.S. EPA results.

08 · Safety & equipment

Safety & equipment

Volkswagen equips the 2026 Tiguan with IQ.DRIVE as standard. The system includes Travel Assist, Front Assist with pedestrian monitoring, Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop and Go, Lane Assist, Rear Traffic Alert and Emergency Assist. Travel Assist provides hands-on lane-centering assistance and can support driver-initiated lane changes in the updated 2026 system. Standard passive protection includes ten airbags, including front-center, driver-knee and rear-side airbags. The vehicle also includes a rearview camera, electronic stability control, automatic post-collision braking and Volkswagen’s Intelligent Crash Response System. Volkswagen reports a five-star overall NHTSA rating for both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions. The manufacturer also reports IIHS results that vary by test and equipment, including Good scores for small-overlap and updated-side testing, plus a Poor result for the moderate-overlap front test.

09 · Strengths

Strengths

The Tiguan’s strongest attributes are its broad usability, standard driver-assistance suite and flexible drivetrain choice. The two-row body provides useful passenger room without the bulk of a three-row SUV. Its 33.8-cubic-foot cargo area expands to 69.8 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. The standard eight-speed automatic is shared across the lineup, while 4MOTION is available below the top grade and standard on the SEL R-Line Turbo. The 201-hp engine improves output over the prior U.S. model, and the new Turbo version gives the range a substantially stronger performance option. Interior technology is another clear strength, with a standard 12.9-inch display, digital instrumentation and wireless smartphone integration. The available cabin upgrades add premium upholstery, massage front seats, ventilated seating and a larger 15-inch screen.

10 · Considerations

Considerations

The North American Tiguan is limited to two rows, so buyers needing seven seats must consider another Volkswagen model or a different market’s long-wheelbase product. The most efficient EPA configuration is the front-wheel-drive S, while 4MOTION reduces fuel economy. The 268-hp engine is exclusive to the SEL R-Line Turbo and comes with all-wheel drive, making it a high-content configuration rather than a lower-cost performance option. Large R-Line wheels may increase tire replacement costs and reduce sidewall cushioning compared with the entry configuration. The touchscreen-heavy interface provides extensive functions but places many vehicle controls within digital menus. Safety performance is strong in several published areas, though the manufacturer’s published IIHS summary shows results that differ by crash test and equipment. Global specifications should not be applied directly to U.S. vehicles.

11 · Recommended use

Recommended use

The Tiguan suits households that want a compact footprint, a comfortable two-row cabin and useful cargo capacity. Front-wheel drive offers the strongest EPA fuel-economy figures and fits urban, suburban and highway commuting. 4MOTION is better suited to drivers who regularly encounter snow, wet roads or unpaved access roads, although it does not turn the Tiguan into a dedicated off-road vehicle. The available 1,800-pound tow rating for U.S. 4MOTION models supports small utility trailers, recreational equipment and light cargo trailers when properly equipped. The SEL R-Line Turbo is the best fit for buyers prioritizing acceleration and premium cabin equipment. The S and SE make more sense for buyers who value lower entry cost and everyday practicality. Families should note that the model has two rows only in North America, with no third-row seating option.
