QUICK BRIEF

Volkswagen’s second-generation Atlas Cross Sport keeps its two-row focus, adds turbo power, and adopts a cleaner, sleeker rear design.

The 2027 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport enters its second generation without abandoning the idea that makes it worthwhile: it is the Atlas for buyers who do not need a third row. Its two-row, five-seat layout is a more honest fit for many families than a rarely used rear bench in a large SUV.

Volkswagen has also given the Cross Sport a more convincing visual identity. The new body is described as smoother and sleeker, with a shortened rear overhang and an almost flush tailgate treatment. That cleaner, more upright-yet-sporting rear is the standout element. The front end has an Audi-family resemblance, but the rear gives the Cross Sport its own sharper character.

Car and Driver reports that the new EVO5 EA888 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder produces 282 horsepower and 258 lb-ft, up 13 hp from before, paired with an eight-speed automatic and either front-wheel drive or 4Motion all-wheel drive. That is a sensible powertrain for this vehicle: sufficiently strong without chasing unnecessary performance theatrics. Volkswagen also says efficiency will improve.

The publication further reports available 12.9- and 15-inch infotainment displays plus a 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster. Large central screens have become the industry norm, heavily shaped by Tesla’s influence, but their value will depend on trim availability and how well Volkswagen handles everyday controls.

Some reported dimensional details conflict between sources, and official EPA fuel-economy figures, pricing, and final specifications have not yet been published. Volkswagen plans to launch the 2027 Atlas Cross Sport in early 2027.

For buyers, the appeal is straightforward: this looks like a more competitive five-seat SUV with a better-resolved design and enough turbocharged performance, especially if a third row would only be wasted space.

CARIARY’S TAKE

The 2027 Atlas Cross Sport is a more competitive SUV because its sleek new design, useful five-seat layout, and stronger turbo power focus on what most buyers will actually use.
